Fat Freddy's Drop - Bays

In addition to Flight of the Conchords, sheep, and Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand is also known for my favorite reggae/dub group, Fat Freddy’s Drop.

I first heard the Hope For a Generation EP back in 2010, and gravitated toward the drawn-out, big band, soulful tunes. Especially “Hope”, a 10-minute jam that builds slowly and methodically with a fantastic peak 6 minutes in.

Their newest album, Bays, is a bit hit or miss, but has some really fantastic hits. “10 Feet Tall” is my favorite, with “Fish in the Sea” a close second. “Razor” trends too much towards the techno side of things and makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. But other than that, it’s a mix of solid tunes with a great flow.

In general, Fat Freddy’s Drop songs just kind of morph. They likely won’t grab you at first. Even the first minute might not do much. But throw > it < on and keep doing what you’re doing. You’ll find yourself head-bopping along shortly.
